Competition General Information
Eligibility
1. Any pre-school through high school student is invited to participate. 2. The immediate past high school winner of the overall Nathaniel Patch Award for “Most Outstanding Musicianship” will not be eligible to enter the following year. 3. The entrant’s program must meet the requirements in the “Repertoire” section below. 4. All applications and fees must be entered online or postmarked by Friday, March 1, 2024. Late applications will be accepted until Friday, March 15, 2024 with an additional charge of $20. Classifications Elementary A Pre-school through 3rd grade Elementary B 4th grade through 5th grade Middle School 6th grade through 8th grade High School 9th grade through 12th grade Adjudication 1. One or more judges selected by the Patch Competition Committee will evaluate each participant. 2. Entrants must bring musical scores for the judges’ use. These will be returned at the completion of judging for each classification. 3. All music submitted to the judges must be original scores. Copies that violate copyright laws will not be accepted. Failure to abide by this rule will result in the participant’s disqualification. 4. The decision of the judges is final. Winners’ Recital 1. First, second and third place winners in each classification will choose one of their competition pieces to perform on the Winners’ Recital. Please indicate your selection on the application form. 2. The recital will be held following the conclusion of the competition. All winners are requested to perform their chosen selection. Prizes 1. Monetary prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners in each classification, and trophies will be presented to the first place winners. 2. The Nathaniel Patch Award and Plaque for Most Outstanding Musicianship will be presented to the most outstanding high school participant. All awards will be presented at the Winners’ Recital. Repertoire:
1. Participants must perform two memorized, original solo works for the piano. Participants may not perform their own compositions or any simplifications, transcriptions, or arrangements.
2. The two pieces must be of contrasting style and of equal difficulty.
3. Each piece must be selected from different periods, i.e. Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary. One movement or individual dance within a larger work is considered as one selection. A Prelude and Fugue, however, may be entered as one or two pieces.
4. Elementary A pieces must be at least 12 measures in length. Beginning with Elementary B and higher, pieces must be at least 16 measures in length.
5. Repeats should not be taken.
6. All repertoire selections will be screened and approved for performance by the Competition Committee. No exceptions to the above rules will be allowed. The Committee’s decision is final.
7. The judges may stop a performer at any time after 8 minutes for Elementary A and B and after 12 minutes for Middle School and High School classifications
